DGS-3630 Series Switches :: Firmware Update with Complete RFC5961 for mitigation of CVE-2004-0230 TCP Denial of Service Vulnerability

Overview

Following the US DHS advisory about the issue: http://www.us-cert.gov/cas/techalerts/TA04-111A.html. The issue was decribed by Tenable Security as: "TCP, when using a large Window Size, makes it easier for remote attackers to guess sequence numbers and cause a denial of service (connection loss) to persistent TCP connections by repeatedly injecting a TCP RST packet, especially in protocols that use long-lived connections, such as BGP."

D-Link was made aware of the reported issues, we performed an investigation. The issue was reported on the DGS-3630 series of switches and we began developing security patches.

The full mitigating solution requires full-implmentation of RFC5961 and proper implemention of it's use on the network.

The firmware below does implement mitigation features which reduces the risks, however owners and IT departments should investigate it's risks across their networks of CVE-2004-0230. The risks elevated by CVE-2004-0230 are not related to D-Link, we release this software to help mitigate it's effect on the networks our devices are connected.

D-Link takes the issues of network security and user privacy very seriously. We have a dedicated task force and product management team on call to address evolving security issues and implement appropriate security measures.
